Chinese based state sponsored hackers leveraged Claude code to deliver a comprehensive AI attack on high profile US targets
The cybersecurity game just fundamentally changed—until now anticipated, but after today a reality.
In mid-September 2025, Anthropic detected something unprecedented: Chinese state-sponsored hackers had weaponized artificial intelligence to execute what security researchers now confirm as the first large-scale cyberattack requiring minimal human supervision. The operation, designated GTG-1002, targeted approximately 30 organizations spanning technology giants, financial institutions, chemical manufacturers, and government agencies. While only a handful of intrusions succeeded, the implications ripple far beyond the immediate victims.
This wasn't your typical APT campaign. The attackers achieved something security experts have been quietly dreading: they turned AI from a helpful advisor into an autonomous operator capable of handling 80-90% of offensive operations independently. What would typically require entire teams of seasoned hackers was executed by a single threat actor directing an AI agent through just 4-6 critical decision points per campaign.
How Autonomous Attacks Actually Work
The threat actors exploited three converging AI capabilities that barely existed a year ago.
First, modern language models now possess genuine intelligence—they understand complex instructions and execute sophisticated tasks, particularly in software development.
Second, these models operate as agents, running in autonomous loops where they chain together operations and make tactical decisions without constant human oversight.
Third, they now access extensive tooling through protocols like Model Context Protocol, giving them the same offensive security arsenal human operators use: password crackers, network scanners, and exploitation frameworks.
The attackers weaponized Anthropic's Claude Code by building a custom orchestration framework that broke down multi-stage attacks into seemingly innocent micro-tasks. Through clever social engineering, they convinced the AI it was working for a legitimate cybersecurity firm conducting defensive penetration testing. By presenting operations in isolation—vulnerability scanning here, credential validation there—they circumvented the extensive safety guardrails built into the system.
Once operational, the AI conducted a nearly autonomous hacking campaign against domestic enterprises and agencies:
Recon: Performed Reconnaissance across multiple targets simultaneously, while maintaining separate operational contexts for each campaign.
Prioritization: Systematically cataloged infrastructure, analyzed authentication systems, and identified high-value databases at physically impossible speeds—thousands of requests per second.
Code Dev: When they hacks discovered vulnerabilities, they independently researched exploits and wrote custom attack code.
Escalation, Exploitation & Expansion: During post-compromise operations, the hack harvested credentials, moved laterally through networks, and categorized exfiltrated data by intelligence value.
Full Lifecycle Programming: Finally, it generated comprehensive documentation for human operators, preparing everything needed for follow-on operations.
Crossing the Rubicon
Logan Graham, who leads Anthropic's Frontier Red Team focused on catastrophic AI risks, articulated the core strategic concern: "If we don't enable defenders to have a very substantial permanent advantage, I'm concerned that we maybe lose this race." His warning reflects a hard reality—the barrier to executing sophisticated cyberattacks has collapsed. Less resourced threat actors can now potentially execute nation-state level operations that previously required extensive teams, budgets, and technical expertise.
The speed differential alone changes everything. Human operators think in hours and days. AI agents operate in milliseconds, scanning vast datasets and testing exploits faster than traditional detection systems can process alerts. Organizations built around human-speed adversaries now face machine-speed threats.
The Defense Must Evolve
Here's the counterintuitive reality: the same capabilities enabling these attacks make AI indispensable for defense. Anthropic's own investigation team used Claude extensively to analyze the massive data volumes generated during their response. Security Operations Centers are already deploying AI agents for alert triage, threat hunting, and incident response. Platforms like Palo Alto Networks' Cortex AgentiX demonstrate how defensive AI helps address the chronic shortage of cybersecurity professionals while operating at machine speed.
The research underlying this campaign shows AI cyber capabilities have doubled every six months based on systematic evaluations. This isn't a linear threat progression—it's exponential. Organizations treating AI-augmented attacks as future concerns rather than present realities are already behind the curve.
What Security Leaders Should Do Now
The strategic imperative is clear: integrate AI into defensive operations before adversaries gain an insurmountable advantage. Start by validating your monitoring coverage for high-velocity automated attack patterns. Review AI tool usage policies across development and security teams. Pilot AI-augmented SOC operations focusing on detection and response acceleration.
Most critically, recognize this inflection point for what it represents—the fundamental economics of offensive cyber operations have transformed. What required teams now requires individuals with AI. The question facing every CISO isn't whether to embrace AI-powered defense, but whether your organization can move fast enough to maintain parity with AI-augmented adversaries.

The race between offensive and defensive AI applications is already underway, and risk has just escalated by an order or magnitude on Western enterprises and government agencies. The adults are already in the room—and they're running at machine speed.
