The CAIO & the Importance of Senior Leadership in Building an AI-Era Team

  • Early Days: Most organizations currently lack the cultural and organizational essentials to support AI, which is up to senior leadership to set the strategic vision and define what constitutes value for in terms of AI and data, meaning:

    • Senior leaders must prioritize top-down decision-making to align data and AI initiatives

    • They must this align this with overarching business objectives

    • Rule: Value emerges only when applied to specific business problems

  • The CAIO should be the primary stakeholder for this new initiative and cultural change at the organizational level

  • The CAIO, if properly skilled & trained, should go beyond establishing technical frameworks and create a compelling business plan to deliver tangible benefits for individual employees to drive cultural shift and unlock real value

  • By the numbers:

    • Corndel’s Data Talent Radar Report, which surveyed 125 senior data professionals, including chief data officers and chief information officers, found that 91% believe senior leadership buy-in is essential for growing junior data talent and 90% see it as key to attracting new talent

    • Moreover, 86% believe leadership support for a digital culture is critical for retaining top talent

    • 86% of leaders believing that leadership support for a digital culture is critical for retaining top talent

  • In our current state, amidst all the mixed messages surrounding AI, everyone must have a personal case for change, otherwise, corporate staff generally prefer to do things how we’ve always done them, precluding the value of IA acceleration

  • Extrapolate this to say that AI premised initiatives should involve affected departments and staff directly, and include them in the vetting process

  • Banging the Drum: To fully realize potential in the AI era, the CAIO & senior leadership must prioritize a strong data culture that drives talent development across the organization, otherwise, as elsewhere, AI initiatives will likely fall short of expectations

  • By defining clear business value, investing in data governance and cultivating a data-driven environment, leaders can maximize new technology potential for business outcomes
