After lagging the frenetic AI industry throughout 2024, Google has unveiled a series of major AI updates, including Gemini 2.0, Deep Research, and Project Mariner, which could fundamentally change work and research
Gemini 2.0 is Google's new AI model for the agentic era, with the currently available Gemini 2.0 Flash being a fast, developer-focused model, and the full Gemini 2.0 model expected to be released in April 2025
Every frontier model company, including Google, is building fully multimodal models from the ground up that are trained on multimodal data, signaling a significant shift in AI development
Deep Research, a feature in Gemini 1.5 Pro, is a powerful AI research assistant that creates multi-step research plans, analyzes information from across the web, and compiles comprehensive reports on complex topics using dozens or hundreds of webpages
Deep Research allows users to enter a prompt, creates a research plan, and then analyzes and compiles information from multiple sources, producing a well-sourced research brief in a matter of minutes, saving users significant time and effort
According to Paul Roetzer, founder and CEO of Marketing AI Institute, Deep Research is a game-changer that opens up new possibilities for research, publishing, and education, and is different from other AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity
Project Mariner is a research prototype that can take control of a user's Chrome browser, moving the cursor, clicking buttons, filling out forms, and navigating websites, demonstrating AI's ability to use computers and potentially changing the future of web browsing
However, Project Mariner also raises concerns about cybersecurity risks, as AI tools that can take actions on a user's machine without direct involvement pose significant risks that need to be addressed before mass market release
It will take the broader market weeks to assimilate and adjust to these new releases, evaluate them, and posit optimal use case adoption strategies, given the highly competitive nature of this fast evolving space.
