Tsk, Tsk TikTok: AI Sabotage

ree

ByteDance fired an Intern in August for "serious disciplinary violations" after they allegedly planted malicious code in AI models.

  • The intern had worked in the company's commercial technology team and interfered with a research project, but did not impact commercial projects or online businesses.

  • Online rumors suggested that the intern's sabotage involved over 8,000 graphical processing units and resulted in losses of "tens of millions of dollars," but ByteDance described these claims as "seriously exaggerated."

  • ByteDance denied these rumors, calling them "seriously exaggerated", and notified the intern's university and industry associations about the incident

Per TikTok, this impacted only research dev, not commercial lines. How many other Interns, let alone developers, staff, etc, across social media and technology have not yet been uncovered?

Not for the Last Time.
